Best Thinset & Tile Mortar for DIYers
Thinset mortar is the adhesive that bonds tile to the floor, wall, or backer board, the part that holds the whole tile job together. The choice is the type for your tile and substrate, plus modified versus unmodified for the situation.
What to look for
- ·Use a polymer-modified thinset for most floor and wall tile; large or heavy tile needs a large-format (medium-bed) mortar to prevent lippage and slumping.
- ·For porcelain and glass, use a thinset rated for them (better bond); over uncoupling membranes, follow the maker (often unmodified).
- ·Mix to the right consistency, use the correct trowel notch for the tile size, and only spread what you can set before it skins over.

Frequently asked
What is thinset mortar?+
Thinset is a cement-based adhesive mixed with water (or a liquid additive) that bonds tile to a substrate like backer board, concrete, or a membrane. It is the structural glue of a tile installation, different from grout, which fills the joints between tiles after the thinset has set.
Modified or unmodified thinset?+
Polymer-modified thinset has additives for a stronger bond and flexibility, used for most floor and wall tile and demanding situations. Unmodified thinset is sometimes required over certain uncoupling and waterproof membranes (because they need water to cure into the mortar). Always follow the membrane or tile maker's spec.
What thinset for large tile?+
Use a large-format (also called medium-bed or LFT) mortar, which is formulated to support big, heavy tiles without slumping or lippage and to fill the larger gaps under them. Standard thinset spread too thick can shrink and crack under large tile, so the right product matters.
What trowel size do I use?+
Match the trowel notch to the tile size: small tiles use a 1/4-inch notch, standard floor tile a 1/4 to 1/2-inch, and large-format tile a 1/2-inch or larger. The goal is full mortar coverage under the tile (back-butter large tile too), with no voids. Bigger tile, bigger notch.
How long does thinset take to cure?+
Thinset is usually firm enough to grout in about 24 hours, though full cure takes longer. Do not walk on or grout a floor too early, and keep heavy loads off until it has set. Curing time varies by product, temperature, and humidity, so check the bag.
