Best Pressure Washers for DIYers
The fast way to clean a deck, driveway, siding, or patio before it looks worse than it is. Electric is plenty for most homes; gas is for big jobs. More flow (GPM) cleans faster than raw pressure (PSI).
What to look for
- ·Electric handles decks, cars, patios, and most siding. Choose gas for driveways, large areas, or all-day cleaning.
- ·GPM (water flow) clears surfaces faster than PSI alone. Look at both numbers, not just the big PSI figure.
- ·Use lower pressure and a wider nozzle on wood and siding. Too much pressure carves the surface.

Frequently asked
Gas or electric pressure washer?+
Electric is quieter, lighter, maintenance-free, and plenty for decks, cars, patios, and most siding. Gas delivers more pressure and flow for driveways and big areas, at the cost of noise, fuel, and upkeep.
What do PSI and GPM mean?+
PSI is the pressure (how hard the water hits) and GPM is the flow (how much water moves). Flow does most of the cleaning speed, so a balanced machine beats one with huge PSI and low GPM.
What PSI is safe for a wood deck?+
Keep it around 500 to 1,200 PSI on wood with a wide 25 to 40 degree nozzle, and keep the tip moving. Too much pressure or a narrow nozzle gouges the boards.
Can a pressure washer strip paint?+
High-PSI gas units can, which is useful for prep but risky on surfaces you want to keep. Use a lower setting and test a small area first if you are only cleaning.
Do I need a soap or detergent tank?+
For decks, siding, and concrete with grime or mildew, a detergent tank and the right cleaner do most of the work, letting you use less pressure. It is a worthwhile feature.
